What Is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is one of the most effective and commonly performed treatments for varicose and spider veins. It is a minimally invasive procedure that closes unhealthy veins so blood is naturally redirected to healthier veins, allowing your circulation to improve while reducing the appearance and symptoms of visible veins.
For larger varicose veins, sclerotherapy is often performed after the underlying source of the vein disease has been treated. Once those larger feeding veins have been closed, your surgeon can target the remaining visible varicose veins with a specialized sclerosing solution. Using ultrasound guidance when necessary, the solution is carefully injected into the affected vein. It irritates the vein lining, causing the vein to collapse, seal shut, and gradually be absorbed by the body over the following weeks and months.
The procedure is performed in the office and typically takes just 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the number of veins being treated. Because only tiny needles are used, anesthesia is usually unnecessary or limited to a small amount of local anesthetic. Most patients experience little discomfort and are able to return to normal daily activities immediately after their appointment, with many returning to work the same day or the following day.
Recovery is generally straightforward. Walking is encouraged because it helps promote healthy circulation and supports the healing process. Patients are usually advised to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and prolonged periods of standing for a few days. Compression stockings may be recommended for several days to improve comfort and optimize treatment results.
As the treated veins fade, many patients notice improvements not only in the appearance of their legs but also in symptoms such as aching, heaviness, swelling, burning, and fatigue. Depending on the extent of your vein disease, more than one treatment session may be recommended to achieve the best possible outcome.
