Lower Extremity Ultrasound

Uses advanced ultrasound imaging to assess blood flow and vein function in the legs, allowing accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment of venous disease.

What Is Lower Extremity Ultrasound?

A lower extremity venous ultrasound is the most important diagnostic test for evaluating vein disease. It allows your vascular specialist to see how blood is flowing through the veins in your legs, determine whether the vein valves are functioning properly, and identify the underlying cause of symptoms such as leg pain, swelling, heaviness, varicose veins, skin discoloration, or slow-healing wounds. Rather than simply treating the visible veins, this examination helps create a treatment plan that addresses the source of the problem.

The test uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of your veins without the use of radiation or needles. During the examination, a trained ultrasound technologist applies a small amount of gel to your skin and gently moves a handheld probe over your leg. You may be asked to stand for part of the study or perform simple breathing or muscle contractions so the technologist can evaluate how well your vein valves open and close under normal conditions. This dynamic assessment is essential for diagnosing chronic venous insufficiency and other disorders of the venous system.

A venous ultrasound is completely noninvasive and typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the complexity of the examination. Most patients experience little more than mild pressure from the ultrasound probe, and no special preparation is usually required. Once the test is complete, you can immediately return to your normal activities.

The information gathered during your ultrasound allows your surgeon to determine whether your symptoms are caused by venous reflux, blood clots, or another vascular condition. It also identifies which veins are responsible for your symptoms and whether treatments such as endovenous ablation, sclerotherapy, or microphlebectomy are appropriate. By providing a detailed map of your venous system, a lower extremity ultrasound ensures that your treatment is precise, effective, and tailored to your individual needs.
